A brief history of bearings

Bearings are the small parts that ensure the smooth running of any machinery and they are literally the load bearers of any machine task. It is often intriguing to see that innovations of such a small size can have such a big impact Yes, how fascinating it may look like, it is the truth. These small mechanisms are the sole reason why we have the audacity to go for the kill in a short time span. Today we see bearings in almost all applications we see around us. Now there are bearings specifically designed to function as Air Compressor Bearings, Vibrating Screen Bearings, Money Counter Bearings, Carrier Roller bearings, or even Steel Mill Bearings.

Here we walk you through the history of mechanical bearings. There is much of a speculation that rolling bearings were there even before the invention of wheel. The claims of Egyptians using roller bearings in the form of tree trunks under sleds can’t be ignored too. There are also Egyptian drawings of bearings used with hand drills. The earliest recovered example of a rolling element bearing is a wooden ball bearing supporting a rotating table from the remains of the Roman Nemi ships in Lake Nemi, Italy. The wrecks were dated to 40 BC. However, the first recorded patent on ball bearings was given to Philip Vaughan, a British inventor and ironmaster who created the first design for a ball bearing in Carmarthen in 1794. His was the first modern ball-bearing design, with the ball running along a groove in the axle assembly. Since then the roller bearings have improved and the innovation is bearings has led to set up of many other machinery. The most used style of roller bearings are the radial bearings. Jules Suriray, a Parisian bicycle mechanic, designed the first radial style ball bearing in 1869, which was then fitted to the winning bicycle ridden by James Moore in the world’s first bicycle road race, Paris-Rouen, in November 1869.

Now when you look around and see various gadgets that are making our life easier, the bearings in them are the real heroes that are less talked of. It doesn’t matter what the gadget is, be it an air compressor or the money counter or even steel mill, there is definitely a bearing involved. There are Air Compressor Bearings, Money Counter Bearings, and even Steel Mill Bearings to serve the purpose and how. These bearings are designed to work bearing high pressure reducing the amount of noise that would have been otherwise produced.

If bearings are what you want and want the best quality (which is an obvious thing), wd-bearing is the manufacturer you can fall back on. Wd-bearing also manufactures bearings for other application like Vibrating Screen Bearings and Carrier Roller bearings. Visit www.wd-bearing.com for more details.
